GitHub previews AI Scan across whole repositories
GitHub has put repository-wide AI Scan into public preview. The agentic scanner examines the latest default-branch commit, extending security checks beyond the code changed in a single pull request.
What changed
The October 28 release says AI Scan can cover languages and patterns outside CodeQL’s scope and place findings alongside existing code-scanning alerts. Each scan has a fixed time budget. Availability differs between organization and personal repositories, and scans use Code Security AI credits. Alerts do not automatically close when a fix merges; a rescan is needed to confirm and close resolved findings. Source: AI Scan for repositories in public preview
Why it matters
An additional scanner is useful if it finds actionable problems that existing checks miss. Our analysis is that alert volume alone is a weak success measure. A team must validate severity, reproduce a finding and determine whether the suggested fix addresses the cause without introducing another issue. Deduplicating known findings helps, but it does not establish that the remaining reports are correct.
What to watch next
Trial the preview against a representative repository with a defined triage process and spending limit. Record verified findings, false positives and time to resolution, then inspect which code the time-bounded run actually covered. A clean scan is not proof that the repository has no vulnerabilities. The practical milestone is a useful addition to a broader review process, with coverage and uncertainty left visible.
