GitHub open-sources Replica for design-system-aware prototypes
GitHub has open-sourced Replica, a prototyping tool built by its design team. The project uses a team’s own components and documentation to guide interactive experiences created through natural-language requests.
What changed
The October 28 release says designers can define guidance while product managers, engineers and others create and refine prototypes through the Copilot app. An optional self-hosted Replica Hub lets teammates explore work and leave feedback. Replica is available under the MIT license. The release provides a path for experimentation and collaboration, rather than a claim that generated prototypes automatically meet production requirements. Why it matters
Using existing components can make a prototype more useful for product discussion because it resembles the actual system a team maintains. Our analysis is that the quality of the supplied guidance becomes part of the result. If documentation omits error states or accessibility behavior, an attractive prototype may still test the wrong assumptions. Review should focus on what the proposed interaction teaches the team.
What to watch next
Check setup requirements, the design-system connection and how shared prototypes are exposed before adopting the workflow. Test realistic tasks with the intended audience, including empty and failure states. The next useful evidence is whether the prototype helps a team make a better decision earlier. Speeding up screen generation is valuable when it leads to clearer feedback, not merely a larger collection of polished mockups.
