RoboticsField roboticsStory 02

An underwater robot keeps its bearings in murky water

What changedSVIn+ combines cameras, an inertial sensor, depth, Doppler velocity and compact 3D sonar in one state estimator. The team tested it during real shipwreck and coral-reef deployments, where the added sensors reduced drift and kept trajectories globally consistent when vision alone was unreliable.

An autonomous underwater vehicle carrying the SVIn+ sensor package swims above the seafloor during a field deployment.

The useful part

Why it matters

Underwater robots need to know where they are even when GPS disappears and the camera can barely see.

Keep in mind

Good to know

These field trials support the estimator, but they do not prove safe autonomy across every vehicle, current, depth or visibility condition.
