A handheld robot gripper records better demonstrations

What changedOpenJaws combines a modular 3D-printed gripper with a low-cost stereo camera. The second camera removes the scale ambiguity and drift that can weaken monocular demonstration labels. The team released a localization benchmark and deployed policies trained from the collected data across several real-robot tasks.

The OpenJaws figure shows its robot-free data-collection gripper, cross-robot deployment and stereo localization tasks.

The useful part

Why it matters

Manipulation data can be gathered away from a robot and later moved onto different hardware without a closed tracking system.

Keep in mind

Good to know

The paper shows selected tasks; it does not establish robust localization or policy transfer in every workspace and robot body.
