Simple robot hands use the table

What changedIORA treats a table or other support as part of the grasp instead of a mere obstacle. It searches for contacts that a low-mobility hand can actually reach, then checks them in physical trials. The paper includes a cooking demonstration with irregular objects.

A robot hand braces irregular objects against a surface while arrows show the supporting contact forces.

The useful part

Why it matters

A cheaper, simpler hand can hold awkward things steady by borrowing support from its surroundings.

Keep in mind

Good to know

The real-world trials cover selected objects and disturbances, not an open-ended kitchen.
