Space robots struggle to catch drifting objects

What changedAstroBench turns catching a loose object inside a spacecraft into a repeatable test. A general-purpose policy captured only 2 of 200 still targets and 4 of 200 moving ones, while a cube-specific policy did much better in its smaller test.

A robotic arm reaches toward free-floating objects in a simulated spacecraft workcell.

The useful part

Why it matters

The benchmark exposes how far ordinary robot skills are from handling objects that drift and spin after contact.

Keep in mind

Good to know

These are benchmark workcells, not on-orbit trials, and the results diagnose transfer rather than flight readiness.
